No water carry-over AFTER installing WFT nozzles
The role a stripper nozzle has in the mill process is extremely important because by containing the cooling water within the water box allows other important instruments to control the mill, to measure the important product parameters and to identify changes required in the process.
When water is carried out of the water box, it is virtually impossible to accurately measure the temperature of the product at the water box outlet. In some instances it is very difficult to determine the actual location of the front end or the tail end and, it makes it impossible to measure the actual size and ovality of the product. Many high accuracy and costly measurement instruments such as pyrometers, gauges, HMDs and others become useless if water is carried out by the product.
WFT stripper nozzles are manufactured in special hardened stainless steels.
The special head design creates internal vortexes when used without any fluid. When used with air or water it converts pressure energy into kinetic energy to effectively counteract the incoming water flow usually carried by the rod, bar or rebar product.
The W5 nozzles reduce the air or water consumption. This reduces the mill energy consumption and therefore the mill operating costs and, in some cases, reduces the mill investment cost.
These nozzles are true energy savings devices and a real effort to provide green products to the industry. Since no water or air may be needed the W5 nozzle reduces environmental contamination as less air or water is required and less of these fluids are impacted by the process.
Energy and operating cost savings:
1. Air operated stripping system:
With no air required 27.32% savings in air consumption is expected. Compressor will have 30% load reduction.
Potential savings: US$ 126,188.55/year:
Potential savings in installation: US$ 140,000.00
Total: US$ 266,000.00 (*)
2. Water operated stripping system:
With no water required 15.62% savings in water consumption is expected. Pumps will have 15.62% load reduction.
Potential savings: US$ 58,509.79/year:
Potential savings in installation: US$ 50,000.00
Total: US$ 108,000.00 (*)
(*): Existing mills with installed equipment may not consider the savings from new equipment.
(**): A small amount of air for cleaning is expected. This was not considered in the calculations.
Tests and results:
W5 nozzles were tested for different sizes and speeds up to 115 m/s for 5.5 mm rod sizes.
In all tests, 97 to 100% success was achieved eliminating water carry-over from the process when used without any air or water. 100% success was achieved when using compressed air and 99% success when using water.
Depending on the nozzle size and product size the performance may vary slightly.
